Leading Edge Protection, Matched to the Blade and the Climate

Leading edge protection (LEP) is the engineered barrier between a blade’s structural laminate and the rain, hail and airborne particles that strike the tip at well over 250 km/h. It keeps the blade’s aerodynamic profile intact and its production where it should be. Most leading edge protection systems last two to three years before they need attention, so the principle we work to is straightforward: maintaining protection is always cheaper than repairing an eroded edge, and our service is built around keeping it that way.

Choosing the right leading edge protection

The right leading edge protection is chosen primarily on climate conditions. Offshore sites, and sandy or high-rainfall regions, are far more aggressive on the leading edge, and generally call for a tougher system such as pre-formed shells or more frequent maintenance visits.
Beyond climate, selecting the right product is ultimately a cost-benefit analysis: location, blade accessibility and the weather all feed into it, product price and application time, how long it takes to get started, and the delays that high winds, high waves, lightning and rain can add on site. We weigh these together and are glad to advise on which option is most beneficial for a given site.

  • Pre-formed polyurethane (PUR) shells: factory-cast shells bonded to the leading edge. The toughest, most erosion-resistant option, and our usual recommendation for offshore blades and for sandy or high-rainfall sites, where conditions are hardest on the edge. Application time is longer compared to a wet-applied LEP.
  • Wet-applied coatings: a field-applied LEP layer that can be repaired directly on the blade — either as a full re-coat or as small, localised touch-ups. That repairability keeps the average cost over time lower, which is why a wet-applied product is our usual recommendation for onshore sites. Application time is faster compared to pre-formed shells.
  • LEP tape / film: quick to apply, but very difficult to repair or replace once it lifts or is damaged — a tape failure usually means stripping and re-applying rather than a simple touch-up. For that reason, we do not recommend it.

Always the right product, tested and proven

The LEP market develops quickly, and a product that suits one site may not suit another. Our team continuously explores, tests and evaluates new leading edge protection systems as they come to market — looking at erosion resistance, repairability, application window and overall cost. It means we can recommend the system that genuinely fits your blades and your climate, with an honest view of the trade-offs.

Fixed-price leading edge protection

We offer leading edge protection as a fixed-price per metre concept, Because maintaining a protected Leading edge is always cheaper than repairing an eroded one, planning the work this way keeps your long-term blade budget both predictable and low.

Experience Across Major Turbine Brands

Sky-Energy technicians bring extensive experience across all leading turbine manufacturers, including Vestas, Siemens Gamesa, Nordex, and GE. This multi-brand expertise enables us to execute blade repairs, upgrades, and maintenance fully aligned with each OEM’s specifications. By leveraging proven knowledge of diverse turbine platforms, we ensure consistency, compliance, and high-quality results across global projects.

Applied to specification, every time

A leading edge protection system is only as good as the edge underneath it. We carry out whatever repair the leading edge needs first — from a laminate repair where erosion has reached the laminate, to simple profiling with filler to restore the aerodynamic profile. Only then do we prepare the substrate to a clean mat finish, degrease, and confirm the blade surface is at least 3 °C above dew point before anything goes on. Shells are bonded with the specified structural adhesive and rolled out free of air; wet systems are built to a controlled film thickness and fully cured. Every application is documented with the Sky-Energy photo card, batch numbers and a weather log — full traceability for QA and warranty. Behind the field team, our internal QC department reviews every blade report and verifies that all product specifications and application conditions have been met. Applied exactly to specification, that is what gives each system its maximum service life.

Certified, applied from Rope Access or platform

Sky-Energy is ISO-certified and our technicians are IRATA-certified (Levels 1–3) with GWO and specialist blade training. We apply leading edge protection from Rope Access or from our covered repair platform, on every major turbine type (Vestas, Siemens, GE, Nordex, Senvion). For larger applications running into several metres, or on sites where the climate is hard to control, the platform is often the better choice: because it is enclosed, it lets us manage temperature, humidity and airborne dust and fibre, so the leading edge protection is applied within specification whatever the weather outside is doing.
